<NaGERST> i know it is VESA, but does any of you friends have some benchmarks on things like doom, quake, quake3 and other games with or without GL. I know BeOS outperformed windows 98 with quite a bit in quake 3.
<Begasus[m]> hi NaGERST , no idea here
<NaGERST> Oh hi Begasus[m] delightful to see you online
<Begasus[m]> heh, I'm mostly here (during the day that is, or around)
<NaGERST> sorry i have been absent a while, even more deaths around me... It is almost like im the only one left soon.
<NaGERST> but lets keep it positive
<Begasus[m]> jikes, not good to hear NaGERST
<nephele> NaGERST: openGL is only an api
<NaGERST> nephele: yes
<nephele> We don't implement it directly, only via llvmpipe
<nephele> anything having their own purpose build software renderer will be much quicker than llvmpipe
<NaGERST> but that was what BeOS had to play with as there was no other, unless they wanted to license directx from microsoft, glide from 3dfx (which they kinda did) or metal from S3.
<nephele> yeah sure. but they had graphics card drivers... we do not
<NaGERST> very good point
<nephele> that is openGL is executed *only* on the CPU in haiku
<nephele> the gpu only displays the finished framebuffer, not much more really
HaikuUser has joined #haiku
<NaGERST> and any modern CPU is a hundred times faster than a voodoo5 at least.
<nephele> we don't support either 3d acceleration, or accelerated decoding of videos
<nephele> both of which modern gpus can do
<NaGERST> nephele: ok, i know those parts. I thank you for explaining, but i have been in this irc channels since the founding. I have a basic grasp on how it works.
<nephele> okay :)
<NaGERST> Begasus[m]: what is new with you there down south?
<Begasus[m]> qt6.9.1 :)
<nephele> in any case, you can test such applications, and i know atleast some stuff is passably playable, if your cpu is fast enough
<NaGERST> i have the darn tootinest fastest pin grid array CPU ever made. the 5800x3D.
<NaGERST> hehe
HaikuUser has quit []
<Begasus[m]> and trying to get something from within qtcreator working and packaging fine NaGERST :)
<nephele> I'm begining to think my cpu does not like me
<NaGERST> wanted to scream yee haw, but it is early and people are asleep
<Begasus[m]> lol
<NaGERST> Begasus[m]: did you read it with a US western accent? If so you win!
<Begasus[m]> NaGERST: is there another way? ;)
<Begasus[m]> anyone using qbs?
<Begasus[m]> our current version in the depot is ancient :P
<NaGERST> I love you man, i promised i would visit belgium one day, but never went over the border from the netherlands. I was i Leiden about 25 times (perhaps an exaggeration)
<Begasus[m]> Leiden still about 2 hours from here by car
<Begasus[m]> I think*
<Begasus[m]> we've been there a few times on dog shows
<nephele> Begasus meets up with Haiku folks each year in belgium ;)
<Begasus[m]> lol nephele this year was the first time :P
<nephele> nah man, you were there before too! :D
<Begasus[m]> but got a taste for more ;)
<Begasus[m]> ah, right, second time :)
<NaGERST> so just next door. 2 hours up here in the north gets you maybe from a main town to a distant village. yeah there is not a lot a people in the north of europe. Just to make it from an inland 100k place to another is VERY long drives from sweden umeå it would either be narvik, murmansk or uleåborg.
<Begasus[m]> yeah, there is no comparison there NaGERST :)
<Begasus[m]> compar...* (bogus English) :)
<NaGERST> Begasus[m]: you hat live decently close (a rail or two away) have you been to the personal computer museum?
<NaGERST> in halden
<Begasus[m]> not that I can remember NaGERST
<Begasus[m]> went to Utrecht back in the days with the HCC-dagen (even did BeOS demos back then)
<NaGERST> I bet it would be fun to go
<Begasus[m]> NaGERST: I've almost lived the museum :D
<NaGERST> Helmond...
<NaGERST> and they have the worst website ever created
<Begasus[m]> that's not that far away

<NaGERST> Begasus[m]: Your old game ports do they still work in binary or would i have to compile them? Some have newer ports, i know but i just wanted to try the 2.** gcc layer
<Begasus[m]> they "should" on BeOS/ZETA I think
<Begasus[m]> haven't looked back anymore
<Begasus[m]> some probably need the game libraries pack I made back then
<NaGERST> yeah
<NaGERST> was the game pack software source available
<Begasus[m]> don't think so
<NaGERST> i mean for fun, to build software for a retro BeOS machine?
<Begasus[m]> at least I wouldn't know where to look for them anymore :)
<NaGERST> aaah it is like the lost wine version for beos in the 90s
<Begasus[m]> should still have the archives/packages somewhere on some* backup :D
<NaGERST> cool
<NaGERST> can i check it out when you have the time?
<Begasus[m]> you know what they say about retired people right? :)
<NaGERST> that we are useless and they prefer us to just die?
<NaGERST> and cost money
<Begasus[m]> that we don't have any time :)
<NaGERST> well
<Begasus[m]> we've done our share for that NaGERST
<NaGERST> indeed my friend.
<Begasus[m]> and now we can do what we "want" to do, not what we "have" to do :)
<nephele> > you know what they say about retired people right? :)
<nephele> The german goverment thinks the answer is "they work too little"
<Begasus[m]> here it comes :P
<Begasus[m]> they worked enough nephele :)
<nephele> Begasus[m]: "CDU-Generalsekretär Linnemann wirft Rentnern vor, zu wenig zu arbeiten" :P
<nephele> Insane times we live in
<NaGERST> Germans wörk wörk =D
<Begasus[m]> nephele: those never did a real work :P
<NaGERST> And nah, i speak pretty fluent german, worse in writing unless it is technical type. Germany can illegalize anything at this point and it wont matter, the police cant stop anything. Germany is the next syria sadly.
<NaGERST> lol
<NaGERST> old people cant fight, right? So we get a free pass.
<NaGERST> watching history it is on average better to fold than to resist a war. less death.
<Habbie> that escalated quickly
<NaGERST> Habbie: sorry
<NaGERST> i have been watching old movies
<NaGERST> Begasus[m]: did you ever get around t osee "the outlaw josey wales"?
<NaGERST> i cried like a baby, even though i disliked the confederate policies.
<Begasus[m]> doesn't ring a bell NaGERST
<NaGERST> It is a clint eastwood movie
<Begasus[m]> not the biggest fan of him here :)
<NaGERST> basicly explains why the "man with no name" and "manco" comes from in the older movies.
<NaGERST> i am not a fan of any person but my king, noone else could get me out in a park if i dont want to

<OscarL> 'lo Begasus[m]! Noticed you have removed $secondaryArchSuffix for "app:" provides from several recipes lately. Not to ruin your good mood, but...
<OscarL> "inrecipe 'app:.*$secondaryArchSuffix' | wc -l" counts 181 offenders :-D
<OscarL> should we consider doing a "mass fix up, no rev-bump" on those? or better to just leave them be until each .recipe is updated?
<Begasus[m]> hi OscarL , yeah, started to remove them when hitting them (and noticed a lot are around)
<Begasus[m]> just though we might as well do this for qgis now and hit the others later
<OscarL> alright.
<Begasus[m]> jmairboeck: already reported a revbump for qgis, if it's really a problem it should be done, but in this case I don't think it harms anything
<Begasus[m]> maybe add an issue asking what the general feeling is about it?

* OscarL wishes we could consolidate LLVM requirements around only one or two versions. Currently is way too easy to end up having upto 5 diferent versions installed as requirements for other apps.
<HaikuUser> Any suggestion why gui app like LibrePCB, WireShark etc does not show but I can see the process list
<OscarL> (only LLVM17 seems to not be depended on ATM, while 12, 16, 18, 19 and LLVM20 all have recipes requiring them :-/)
<nephele> could be either that the window is offscreen, or that it never opened a window. If you enable "show expander" in the deskbar settings you can see if it actually does have a window open
<nephele> OscarL: consolidate around whatever beta5 requires then? :)
<OscarL> llvm12 it is! (Begasus[m] won't be happy :-P)
cassisian has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<nephele> I don't see much reason to use newer llvm, and if there is a reason you can use llvm20 for the rest, i suppose ... :)
<OscarL> As with Python's... I don't mind providing multiple versions of the interpreter, as there are good reasons to choose or need one over the other. But at least we have been trying to consolidate .hpkg that require Python... so only one is really needed.
