Would having torrents for packages (with support for it in Haiku) help, and be usable?
jmairboeck has joined #haiku
<nipos>
I also had that idea some time ago.I guess it could work really good.Since hpkgs stay on the system once installed,users could (optionally,of course) keep seeding their installed packages.On the other hand,implementing such a system and integrating it with good UI/UX may be quite a lot of work.But when it's done,it could basically scale to billions of Haiku users without having to worry about server bandwidth
<nipos>
ever again.
<nephele>
What do torrents help if nobody seeds them? and if it's just servers seeding you are better off not using torrent...
Nasina has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
<nipos>
Why do you think nobody would seed?I'd be absolutely happy to do so,and other users may,too
<nephele>
I think the requirement is unreasonable for desktop computers

nephele: I have a question about the LayoutKit...
<nipos>
I'm currently trying to switch SerialConnect to LayoutKit to solve the scrollbar size issue,but how do I automatically remove the bottom right corner from the scroll bar size without manually changing its size?
<nipos>
The only other application I found which uses such a layout is Terminal,but its code seems very complicated and big.
<nephele>
you want to remove the knob?
<nipos>
No,I want to make the scroll bar so much smaller that the down arrow isn't hidden behind it
<nephele>
the layout kit should do that automatically... hmm, have you looked at stylededit? other than that i'd have to look at what you are working on...
<nipos>
StyledEdit has both a vertical and a horizontal scrollbar,SerialConnect only a vertical one

Are there any plans to port Tor to Haiku?
<nipos>
nephele: That's the modified SerialWindow.cpp file
<nipos>
zelectric: Tor has been available on Haiku for years.
<zelectric>
nipos, seriously? well where have *I* been. >_<
<zelectric>
is there a way to roll up a Tor Haiku LiveCD?
<nipos>
Maybe there is,but what's the point in this?You can easily install it from the repo
<zelectric>
nipos, thanks! Oh, I just thought about making something like the Tails distro but with Haiku
<nipos>
That won't make sense right now,since most of the system applications don't support using Tor anyway.
<zelectric>
nipos, thanks! :)

grabbing qt6_declarative-6.9.1-2-x86_64.hpkg and moving it to /Opslag/haikuports/packages/qt6_declarative-6.9.1-2-x86_64.hpkg
<Begasus[m]>
Still good with cmake-4.1.0-rc and ninja-1.13.0 :)
<nipos>
You can install and run Tor,you can make WebPositive use it using a command line option (the graphical proxy settings are broken currently),most Qt and GTK apps will probably also use Tor just fine,but pkgman,HaikuDepot,Vision,mail_daemon,etc. most likely won't
<zelectric>
nipos, hey thanks for the advice in such great detail! I wasn't expecting it! :D

waddlesplash nice ! so it will replace the MTU=1500 by default ?
<waddlesplash>
right now it only detects downward
<waddlesplash>
so this will only be relevant if the path MTU is less than 1500, right now
<waddlesplash>
eventually I'll probably implement enough for us to reactivate jumbo frames and then it will be more important
<Anarchos>
waddlesplash your skills always impress me

Is there a requirement for app to be published in Haiku depot, to provide source code?
<Anarchos>
gregork not at all, you can publish it everywhere you want.
<Anarchos>
gregork HaikuDepot is just our centralized repo.
<gregork>
But that means trojans can get through
<Anarchos>
gregork i am not sure there is an antivirus on Haikudepot though

there are few bits of closed-source software in HaikuDepot, but not much, and we control those carefully. stuff like WiFi firmwares mostly
<waddlesplash>
you can't publish any random binary, in general it has to be built from source
