<matteobin> Would it be possible to port Haiku to 32 bit PowerPC? I'm talking about a 2005 Mac mini.
mmu_man has joined #haiku
janking has quit []
janking has joined #haiku
<zdykstra1> anything is possible
<zdykstra1> not likely to happen, though.
<matteobin> Could you please elaborate why, if you know? Thank you. :)
<swiftbanana[m]> Hardware is rare and people lost interest
<swiftbanana[m]> To be fair, there is only two modern OS that I know of that provides builds for PPC 32bit, MorphOS and Adélie Linux
<matteobin> It depends on what you define as modern. NetBSD does work on my PPC 32 bit.
<matteobin> I think all BSDs offer support for PPC 32 bit.
<swiftbanana[m]> Oh right, forgot about NetBSD
<matteobin> MorphOS isn't Free Software, right?
<swiftbanana[m]> I don’t think so
<swiftbanana[m]> It is paid at least
<matteobin> The kernel is proprietary.
<matteobin> Other parts might be Free Software.
mmu_man has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<matteobin> I checked after asking, sorry.
<swiftbanana[m]> Np
<swiftbanana[m]> What are you trying to do with this fine computer?
mmu_man has joined #haiku
<matteobin> Just toying around. I'll probably settle with NetBSD, since it does everything I need to.
<matteobin> However I've always been very curious to try Haiku out and my Mac mini seemed a good fit.
<matteobin> I have a netbook with 1 GB of RAM that could be a good fit as well. However I don't need if WiFi would work.
<matteobin> s/need/know
<swiftbanana[m]> Yeah, netbook seems more promising
<swiftbanana[m]> I too would enjoy Haiku on my PowerMac G4, but well, old Mac OS is fun too
<swiftbanana[m]> Wifi may or may not work, you can live-USB-try to see if that’s your case
<Habbie> wifi works on my chromebook
<swiftbanana[m]> It doesn’t on my Latitude D-whatever =(
<matteobin> Old Mac OS is fun, but it's not Free Software as I would like. I guess I'm hard to please. :D

<swiftbanana[m]> My "use-case" for the G4 computer is fiddling with retro hardware/software so I don’t really care about free or non-free software in this context, but if yours is different it makes sense you would ah ah
<matteobin> I guess I'm a principle guy. Moreover what I really get a kick out of it is writing new software for old hardware. This is easier if the OS if free software as well.

<OscarL> waddlesplash: replied in +/9637. Here are the relevant syslog fragments for PS10 on Atom N450 and AMD E-450: https://bpa.st/SAUQ (nice work!)
<waddlesplash> OscarL: the E450 might not be actually using idle because right now the driver never uses C2
<waddlesplash> only C1 or C3
<waddlesplash> but at least we don't crash so that's nice

<OscarL> Unrelated but... CPU frequency reporting (as seen in ActivityMonitor's charts) is all kinds of wrong on N450 and E-450 (none has P-State drivers).
<OscarL> CPU freq goes downs if you fully overlap ActivityMonitor window with, say a Terminal window for example, lol :-D
<OscarL> I should write a proper ticket about this.
<erysdren> OscarL, can i DM you? i want to show you something i wrote, but i don't want to interrupt the haiku chatter too much
<OscarL> In the past I have noticed this "reported cpu freq weirdness" on the N4020, where ActivityMonitor gives different values for it depending if you're using the regular window, or the replicant (with both giving conflicting info it run at the same time).
