<HaikuUser>
So what's the deal with the 32 bit version of Haiku, does it only work on old 32 bit systems? I can't get it to boot on either my nice laptop or this Atom based netbook, but the 64 bit version works fine
<Skipp_OSX>
It should work on all 32-bit systems (that it works on)
<HaikuUser>
so it won't work on a 64 bit cpu?
<Skipp_OSX>
I know others are running on Atom based laptop so no, that's not the reason.
<HaikuUser>
hmm
<Skipp_OSX>
It should work on a 64-bit CPU yes
<HaikuUser>
I guess I could try one more time, but the nightly gcc build just goes to a black screen after showing the usual boot screen, typing from the 64 bit version
<Skipp_OSX>
You'll only be able to use about 2.5GiB of RAM total, but I have a 64-bit system with 8GiB RAM running the 32-bit version here.
<HaikuUser>
hmm
<Skipp_OSX>
try safe-mode video? But if 64-bit boots 32-bit should too...
<HaikuUser>
that's what i thought, yeah
<HaikuUser>
it wasn't my laptop come to think of it it was my HP Elitedesk, the beta 5 32bit won't boot on there
<HaikuUser>
or on this netbook but let me try again and see
<HaikuUser>
I suppose i could just also be happy with this working fine the way it is haha
<HaikuUser>
feels weird playing Diablo on Haiku, like wait this isn't Chorum 3 or or however you spell that
<HaikuUser>
my friend got the boxed set for that game when we were in high school
<Skipp_OSX>
great game
<HaikuUser>
I was playing with the 32 bit build in Virtualbox the other day, to see if I could install Haiku on top of BeOS Max edition, and I did manage to more or less
<HaikuUser>
but pretty much all the games that came with it had dependancy errors. The Hexen port works well though
<HaikuUser>
the only 32 bit old app I'm really craving I think is this one music player that had vu plugins that would show up in the deskbar
<HaikuUser>
and I remember a BeOS app that you could hum into a microphone and it would turn it into midi somehow
<HaikuUser>
wow the dedicated scroll area on this trackpad even works, Haiku sure is nice

hi OscarL
<OscarL>
In my experience, on machines that are "BIOS only"... both 32 and 64 bits versions of Haiku work ok if the other does (assuming CPU is 64 bits, of course).
<OscarL>
hey there Snappo.
<Snappo>
I don't think this netbook has UEFI but it has a windows 7 starter badge on it
<OscarL>
on machines that have (U)EFI... things can get a bit more complicated.
<Snappo>
I got it at a pawn shop for $30
<Snappo>
having fun playing random Linux games from my teen years
<Snappo>
Frozen Bubble isn't in the Arch repos, smh
<Snappo>
it's in Haiku Ports though
<OscarL>
I have "Win7 era" netbooks, Atom N450/N455, those are BIOS only... no big problems there. On the Atom N2600 based one (also "Win7" era)... the crappy/early UEFI gave me some issues at first.
<OscarL>
on machines that are EFI only (no CSM/Legacy)... some only seem to boot 64 bits Haiku (at least that's the case for Begasus[m], IIRC).
<OscarL>
In any case Snappo... give the boot loader troubleshoot options a go. Usually, either disabling SMP, or forcing fail-safe graphics mode, have helped me the most.
<OscarL>
(had to use less and less that "disable SMP" as time went by, but I had to use it for a looong time in one of the Atom netbooks)
<Snappo>
it shows up as Intel Atom Processor D4xx/D5xx/N4xx/N5xx
<OscarL>
For the internal screen, the intel_extreme graphics driver should work OK... just don't try to use it with an externa monitor.
<Snappo>
heh ok
<Snappo>
what happens if i try to use an external monitor, Bill Gates breaks my legs?
<OscarL>
alternatively... if your ARE going to use an external monitor... hook it up before booting into Haiku, and force fail-safe / VESA graphics.
<Snappo>
I'm not too worried about it, I have the EliteDesk too

<OscarL>
Snappo: nah, is just that the intel_extreme driver in Haiku has some issues with those GMA 3150 video cards. Just trying to change resoltions might screw things up :-D

I kind of want to see if x512[m] 's nvidia driver works on my new laptop but I don't want to nuke my CachyOS install

evening
<gordonjcp>
somewhat blue sky thinking right here, but is there anyone good at Haiku style icons that'd be into doing an icon spritesheet for an app? Maybe 60 or so icones
