<\[m]>
I've been literally buying 3 different t14/t14s and all have their fans going fckng wild ☹️ sent them all back
<\[m]>
going to stick with the arm in the current state I think, rather have a laptop not trying to fly that has some quirks than these other fckng heating plates
<\[m]>
yeah dump in more fckng NPUs that nobody gives a fuck about, let's see how that optimises the architecture ☹️ I hate this new world
<\[m]>
but maybe the fan thermal thresholds are just set too high on the t14s x1e ? idk - but it doesn't make noise at least 🙂
<tobhe[m]>
my T14s actually is totally silent so I wonder what the difference is
<tobhe[m]>
I can hear it if I get very close so the fans are working
<anthony25>
on the slim 7x, most of the time the fans are not running (and the laptop is cold), and even when they run it's really silent
<anthony25>
ha you were talking about the amd/intel versions of the t14?
<\[m]>
tobhe[m]: maybe my mistake was to not want to buy intel and the amd are just too new to be optimised ☹️
<tobhe[m]>
I was also talking about the x1e so it seems we agree that that one isn't loud 🙂
<\[m]>
or the recent dies all suffer from heat problems trying to cram in too much perf? idk - I have changed 3 times my work laptop for fan noise and it got quiet ont he intel core ultra 5
<\[m]>
just not a great sign on the wall the current state of the company and letting go multiple kernel devs
<tobhe[m]>
my last intel thinkpad was a t420 that was more noticeable
<\[m]>
tobhe[m]: agreed yes, it runs great
<\[m]>
until I compile something and almost burn myself lol
<tobhe[m]>
yep that seems more likely
<\[m]>
anthony25: yes I tried out 3 x86 laptops, sorry for the confusion
<\[m]>
one I sold to a friend wiht new popos alpha xaxa good luck 😆
<tobhe[m]>
I also very much like the non-existing fans on my M2 Air
<\[m]>
that was my second choice but everything is soldered and it becomes double the price quite fast
<\[m]>
and still no eDP support on asahi linux - the apple intelligence opt out is for me just a hard no to that ecosystem
<\[m]>
this reseller is going to hate me for sending back this many laptops 😆
<\[m]>
I've held one at a gathering once, the people explaining the choices
<\[m]>
it all made so much sense but meh it's too gnuood
<tobhe[m]>
the pocket and next actually look a lot better

if it's to have a raspberry pi… get cheap x1 and limit the cpu frequency to get something pretty much fanless and good battery
<anthony25>
* get a cheap x1
<anthony25>
or a chromebook, actually
<anthony25>
it's closer in term of price

<\[m]>
anyone has 6.17-rc7 or so built somewhere?
agl_ is now known as agl
<\[m]>
or just the hotplug / 4lanes patches?
<\[m]>
Val Packett I did for 1 at least, but it's just running way too hot tbh - wcyd
<\[m]>
I even limited cpu freq and configured tlp
<valpackett>
interesting. my previous laptop is an L14gen2a (5850U) and it's actually comparable to the x1e in terms of idle consumption in linux (~4-5W)
<valpackett>
linux is still missing some *big* power savings compared to windows x_x
<valpackett>
i'm currently playing with the LAVD scheduler to see if core compaction could help with keeping cpu clusters fully off all the time like windows does but looks like not really (still the scheduling in general while not completely idle might be better in the long run, let's see)
<robclark>
iirc the pci work to be able to power down the thing nvme is hooked up to is still WIP, and without that we can't hit XO.. I might be mangling that description, bamse or konradybcio would know better
<robclark>
but yeah, not going into lowest power state yet
<valpackett>
hmm, ASPM on the nvme (setting L1 on both controller and device) already makes 2W of difference, you're saying that might be device side only so far?
<Jasper[m]>
I think he means whatever SoC subsystem nvme is connected to
<valpackett>
nvme is connected to the PCIe subsystem
<valpackett>
the unfortunate thing is that precisely that (ASPM on the SSD) can cause random hard freezes x_x
<robclark>
right.. but my (perhaps imperfect) understanding is that we can't actually power off the pcie that nvme is attached to without the filesystem going poof
<valpackett>
hmmm but windows can?
<robclark>
I'd assume so
<JensGlathe[m]>
X13s really has WCD9380 according to dt. Will try out.
<robclark>
I guess eDP PSR would also save some power (for screen-on idle)
<valpackett>
robclark: right, wanted to ask about that
<valpackett>
on my machine PSRed frames just show up as black screen, i.e. picture is only visible when moving the mouse etc.
<valpackett>
i've heard here that the code for it "has bitrotted" but what would the actual bug be?
<JensGlathe[m]>
PSR sounds like a PITA
<robclark>
not sure, IIRC PSR was enabled briefly but then disabled because it was causing problems.. and not sure if anyone has had time to look at it since
<JensGlathe[m]>
Looks a bit like PSR is one of the issues with my ATNA40CT01
<JensGlathe[m]>
But... a data sheet would really help
<Jasper[m]>
Btw, did anyone end up testing the speaker prot code on x13s?
<steev>
i'm running it here, but... i haven't undone whatever it is that limits the speakers
<steev>
everyone and their mother is asking me about kali stuff, especially after i was snubbed with no mention in the release notes yesterday
<valpackett>
steev: oh huh. maybe it's not just dependent on the wcd..
<steev>
that's the output from the command `amixer -D sysdefault scontents | grep HIFI`
<valpackett>
@jglathe:matrix.org : i wanted to look at the actual eDP spec but it's apparently not just findable on the internet (unlike DP)
<JensGlathe[m]>
yep
<valpackett>
hmmmmm, in dp_ctrl.c the `psr_op_comp` is completed no matter which intr flags is set, PSR_UPDATE_INT or CAPTURE or EXIT.. comment says wait for UPDATE
<valpackett>
there are also error flags that are not handled
<JensGlathe[m]>
I've seen intermittent errors on writing display state with no effect on the display.
<valpackett>
@_oftc_robclark:matrix.org: it is mostly screen-on idle that i'm concerned with, and on windows it goes down as low as 1.5W.. which is why i'm wondering about stuff like CPU clusters
<valpackett>
also is the thunderbolt controller powered off right now without a driver for it?
<konradybcio>
yes
<konradybcio>
robclark psr saves a lot of power, but it's bitrotten, at least on the surface laptop.. it used to work fine on x13s 1.5-2y ago
<konradybcio>
(cc lumag: )
<konradybcio>
Val Packett: i get the same behavior you described.. black unless the screen updates
witcher01 has joined #aarch64-laptops
<valpackett>
mmm.. then it would be useful to check on an x13s now
<valpackett>
to see if it's a regression or it's only an issue with newer panels (0.o)
