deathmist: hmm, I think passthru vs not matters for how fw leaves things? Maybe bamse remembers this?
<robclark>
that said, I'm using CONFIG_IOMMU_DEFAULT_DMA_STRICT=y .. I think arm-smmu-qcom.c in theory does all the special things to keep efifb working

Got some issues with clicking on things on my X13s, probably related to #Debian Testing. Trackpoint buttons no longer do anything, touchpad no longer when tapping, but when pressing it (I prefer tapping).
<erebion_muc>
Anyone else noticed that or is it just an issue for me?
<erebion_muc>
Then it randomly stopped and entirely and I couldn't click anything and worked again ~ a mjnute later.
<jdb[m]>
Touchpad is working fine for me on my X13s, running Debian too
<erebion_muc>
What kernel version?
<erebion_muc>
Am on 6.12.38+deb13-arm64
<jdb[m]>
6.15 from experimental
<Sashko[m]>
I'm using X13s with 6.16 kernel. I did not notice any problem with touchpad.
<Sashko[m]>
But when the laptop is attached to a USB-C dock, the audio quality is inacceptable, it sounds distorted. It works well with another laptop. Is it a known problem? Is anyone having similar issues?
<valpackett>
huh. audio over the built in soundcard but only when the unrelated dock is plugged in?
<travmurav[m]>
/me wonders if this would fix weird "sound gets quieter when voice is present" issue he has on his x13s headset jack
<travmurav[m]>
Perhaps matches "boominess on attacks" if i interpret that as "first few ms of speech are normal volume then quieter", should mess with those knobs and see i guess...
<valpackett>
oh, yeah, in general Weird-Ass Volume Behavior is probably the compander
<Sashko[m]>
s/inacceptable/unacceptable/
<Jasper[m]>
<valpackett> "(for everyone using built-in..." <- HMMMM
chrisl has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<valpackett>
the boominess was only on speakers and it was like "volume rising quickly in music pops *waaaay* louder than the set volume level would ever permit"
<valpackett>
while on headphones the compander would do very odd channel balance nonsense where any sound quieter than some floor would pan hard left
<travmurav[m]>
Did you see it on x1 things or on x13s (too) btw?
<valpackett>
i don't have an x13s :D
<travmurav[m]>
Yeah guessed so
<travmurav[m]>
As in, didnt recall otherwise so had to ask xD
<valpackett>
this specific behavior was on the dell 7455
<valpackett>
but different machines might have differently terrible default configuration for this effect that shouldn't be enabled without specifically tuning it
<valpackett>
the headphone ULP mode is pretty much universally just guaranteed distortion lol
chrisl has joined #aarch64-laptops
<travmurav[m]>
eh, poking at those knobs didn't change anything, sad
<jdb[m]>
I would be very curious to see a Geekbench 6.4 Preview for ARM run on the Surface Pro 12 which is fanless as well
<Sashko[m]>
it looks like the USB-C dock problem is not related to the X13s indeed. it disappeared after reconnecting everything 🤦♀️ sorry for the noise.
<Jasper[m]>
<valpackett> "while on headphones the compande..." <- I had this less these days, but the sound did get distorted above ~35% volume
<Jasper[m]>
<clover[m]> "wonder how fast t14s is in..." <- iirc around double? heard some murmur when it released at least
<Jasper[m]>
Apologies to the IRC users for the reply formatting
<jdb[m]>
Here are the latest results on an X1 fanless model:
<valpackett>
but the limitation of geekbench is that it's a rather short run

<Treibholz[m]>
I prefer a fanless laptop... With my personal benchmark-tool (came into existence by accident, had a complete different purpose in the beginning), the X13s has ~2000 points (native on Trixie, 1300 in WSL), AMD Ryzen5 5600X has 2600, MacMini M4 has 2800.
<Treibholz[m]>
So I'm happy with the speed of the X13s - I just miss proper suspend and maybe a little kvm...
<Treibholz[m]>
btw. a Raspberry 3 with NetBSD has 52 points :-)
<Treibholz[m]>
an OrangePi5+ ~600
<deathmist>
my X1E Vivobook is practically fanless with how low of an RPM both of the fans spin at (without control being possible?) under Linux lol
<deathmist>
seen multiple critical thermal point triggered shutdowns during long full system compile loads
<valpackett>
my x1e dell does not spin the fan under light load
chrisl has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<deathmist>
under windows I can make this thing sounds like an actual jet engine though so that's something
<deathmist>
(it's not configured like that by default, that's with me setting the fans to maximum speed via MyASUS)
<valpackett>
but it doesn't get to critical points either, with a long compile it throttles just fine, keeping some sensor like cpu1_2 or what it was at precisely 90°
<valpackett>
there is some buggy behavior with the fans very occasionally, like sometimes they do get stuck in noisy mode :D
<valpackett>
but generally firmware manages them fine without os involvement
<Treibholz[m]>
The T14Gen3 with a Core i7 1260P was only faster in the first 30sec, than the X13s - although it has a very annoying fan - but it still throttles quite fast (AND is hot)
<deathmist>
pretty sure on asus it's fully managed by some MyASUS windows crap and runs on a static speed firmware default under Linux right now for me
<deathmist>
Treibholz[m]: if it's on a git repo I could run it for X1E reference if you're interested
<valpackett>
deathmist: welp, i guess asus is just as reliant on custom driver crap as they were years ago when my mom had a big fat asus laptop
<valpackett>
which did nooot run well without asus drivers at all
chrisl has joined #aarch64-laptops
<valpackett>
how's the default fan curve on t14s and other snapdragon lenovos? the amd l14 i have is horribly noisy with firmware-controlled fan
<Treibholz[m]>
deathmist: It's a script, that needs about 1GB of input-data (mails in a maildir), so I would need publish the same data as well. It was never meant, to be a benchmark - it just became one for me :-)

fun, replacement display for slim7x costs as much as a used device locally
<macc24>
Val Packett: on slim7x fan curve is theoretically customizable

at least from what dsdt says

I love the X13s, but I really miss proper suspend too :-(

Treibholz: very interesting your comparison with a Core i7 1260P, I didn't expect such a result in favor of the X13s
<Treibholz[m]>
jdb: The T14g3 was the first Thinkpad, I bought brand new (their webshop had a glitch, and subtracted options, instead of adding them to the price..., so I had to try if it will work...). I was so annoyed by the noise, heat, max 3h of battery, that I "downgraded" to a used X13s. (the 4k display was nice though)
<jdb[m]>
I am annoyed by fan noise too. I wish I had found a 32GB version of the X13s though
<jdb[m]>
I can't find one at a decent price at the moment
<Treibholz[m]>
yeah, I was lucky and got mine with 32GB/1TB for ~580€ (with italian keyboard, but I don't care...) currently they start at 850€ at that shop.
<\[m]>
jdb do you have something like session restore after every shut down?
<macc24>
\: i also need the lid, it's like, bound as one piece
<macc24>
also tbh having a spare laptop for parts is more useful than saving 200 euro

but they are not all as important, so the key ones should get a strong focus
<jdb[m]>

I don't really care for the audio-jack. I either use bluetooth headsets, or sometimes the normal speakers (which sound better in the X13s as in the T14g3 on linux!) after something manual ( I forgot what it was, I even got the built-in mic running)

I have no trouble with the Bluez at all, sound/mic all working. Jack is working too had to dig deep in my cabinet to find one.

But native buildin speaker would be nice to have.
