<angelthorns> hi, I got my laptop running postmarketos-trailblazer (Lenovo Yoga Slim 7x) running linux-next with wifi, 3d, audio etc today, the only problem is there is an issue with the drm driver that the display stutters very frequently making it basically 15fps and spamming my dmesg with this: https://pastebin.com/raw/vV3yRFwx anyone had this issue before or that knows how to fix it? thanks :)

<angelthorns> steev: the linux-next im on is 20250703 so only a week old do you think it would be a good idea to compile at the latest commit?

<steev> angelthorns: it's just a single patch though, you could just pull it in
<steev> rather than bump to the latest -next
<alexVinarskis[m]> Ah, didn't know they landed it. In 20250710 it was still missing, thanks, will update my next as well. So far i was just pulling that one in, worked well.
<steev> it landed in torvalds tree

<\[m]> <zdykstra> "T14s CTO option is back. Thinkin..." <- yeah that and 64GB = 2.5k 😢
<\[m]> funnily when I ordered the ideapad 5 slim -> putting 500GB disk instead of 1TB made it 130 euro cheaper and the 2TB wd disk is 144 euro 😆

<robclark> when I ordered my yoga 7x last summer, the 16->32GB RAM upgrade was ~$10 and the 512GB->1TB nvme was ~$10.. for not being unreasonable, I rewarded lenovo with an extra $20 :-)

<\[m]> <JensGlathe[m]> "\: but you need to open it" <- that doesn't void warranty
<\[m]> yes I have an adapter thing printed instead of those from aliexpress
<\[m]> oh i shouldn't use reply for irc or it's only for multi line / multi replies
<JensGlathe[m]> Hmm I see it, but I‘m on matrix
<JensGlathe[m]> Anyway, fighting a bit on updating a new image that would support the Ideapad slim 5x
<JensGlathe[m]> The kernel 6.16.0-rc5-jg-1 contains the newest dt for it

<zdykstra> Not quite sure how usable that combo is right now, but I have hope that it'll come together.
<alexVinarskis[m]> are you sure that opening the device voids the warranty, even if you did not damage anything else? eg. dell list a 'field replacable units' for XPS 9345 [1], which include SSD. These can be replaced by user without losign warranty. they also provide nice guides with images. Seems as long as you dont break anything else, its fine to open and replace things. [1]:
<alexVinarskis[m]> I took out entire motherboard on my 9345, removed most of thigns out when looking for onboard EC. When I had issues with BIOS they decided to do a warranty motherboard replacement, weren't bothered at all (even though experienced tech person could for sure tell that cover was removed plenty of times).
<\[m]> zdykstra ah yeah somehow usa is always 20% cheaper - I guess less taxes?
<zdykstra> Do you have a 20% off coupon? It automatically applied one for me.
chrisl has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<\[m]> alexVinarskis I am 100% certain it doesn't, I put another disk in my x13s and I had the keyboard/mousepad replaced by lenovo under warranty
<\[m]> I looked and in my local lenovo shop it's 6%
<\[m]> I get €2.324,98 as total for that setup in belgian lenovo shop 🤷 anyway seems i'm an ideapad aficionado from tomorrow on 🙂
<\[m]> I was referring to hardware usually being cheaper in the USA more generally for some reason

<craftyguy> tobhe_: how is it? I'm thinking of replacing my x13s... I just really want hw virt 😒
<tobhe_> works perfectly fine. I think even nested virt is supported but I have never needed that
<tobhe_> I have an m2 air and I love it. passively cooled like the x13s but a little faster and hardware support is pretty good in Asahi nowadays
<tobhe_> the only serious limitation I can think of is missing dp alt mode for now, but I don't use external screens on my laptop a lot so it doesn't bother me
<craftyguy> How's the battery?
<tobhe[m]> pretty good while it's running, idle consumption is not as good as on macos
<tobhe[m]> might survive one day while suspended but not much more
chrisl has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<jannau> nested virt needs m2+ and I'm not sure if it still needs patches with 6.15
chrisl has joined #aarch64-laptops
<jannau> idle and suspend power consumption of m1/m2 pro/max devices is worse than plain m1/m2
<craftyguy> Well I can't even suspend/resume my x13s without it hard hanging, so that sounds like an improvement 😂
<tobhe[m]> tbh it works fine for me, I just turn the machine off when I don't need it for a few days
<craftyguy> Interesting about pro/max being worse for PM, good to know. Seems like a M1 or M2 air would be good for me
<tobhe[m]> apple just managed to have insane idle lifetime so in comparison it is noticeable
<craftyguy> ya I have gotten used to just powering off the x13s when I can't leave it plugged in
<tobhe[m]> also if you do want external screens I macbook pros with HDMI port should work
<tobhe[m]> but I prefer passive cooling and the air form factor

<\[m]> I've tested display link adapter for external screen and it worked fine too fyi
<craftyguy> thanks for that link. I saw some earlier version of this page a while back, looks like a lot more stuff is working now!
<steev> craftyguy: that seems like something in your environment, i suspend/resume just fine here
chrisl has joined #aarch64-laptops
<\[m]> https://www.synaptics.com/products/displaylink-graphics/displaylink-products-list I think I got one of those cheaper startech ones for testing but in the end the gpu(s) are still too weak on the m1 and I don't like the new air model
chrisl has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
chrisl has joined #aarch64-laptops
<craftyguy> steev: ya I've been over this a few times here, but I basically can't figure out how to debug it. It doesn't resume (or doesn't reach suspend? 🤷‍♂️), magic sysrq doesn't work at all. I have to hard power off to recover. Others running the same OS/kernel/config have no problem. I'm "lucky" I guess
<craftyguy> and el2/hw virt on the x13s / qcom stuff is, well, just stupid. I use slbounce all the time, and I'm really grateful it exists.. it's better than nothing, buuuut it's risky because I have no clue when it's suddenly going to power off. I guess that situation will never improve for this SOC?
<craftyguy> otherwise it's a nice laptop, and most folks probably don't care about that stuff 😛
chrisl has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<steev> i *hope* the situation will improve at some point, because i really miss el2
<steev> but it's hard to say, and not exactly easy for someone like me (clueless) to help get it working
<steev> is it suspend while el2/slbounce or you mean when not?
