ChanServ changed the topic of #aarch64-laptops to: Linux support for AArch64 Laptops (Chrome OS Trogdor Devices - Asus NovaGo TP370QL - HP Envy x2 - Lenovo Mixx 630 - Lenovo Yoga C630 - Lenovo ThinkPad X13s - and various other snapdragon laptops) - https://oftc.irclog.whitequark.org/aarch64-laptops

Okay, so I have the acpi dump and hwinfo uploaded here: https://github.com/aarch64-laptops/build/tree/master/misc/microsoft-surface-pro-12-in I have tried making my own dts file using automated tools, to various level of non-success. x1p42100 support has only just been added to upstream kernel, so I think I might have to base off of that and see where I get

hello, I have a t14s, I lost the firmware from windows but it mostly works. is it correct that the t14s fw is in the distro? backlight control doesn't work
<bonniek>
before i recover windows, do i need to?
<bonniek>
(ubuntu-concept)
<JensGlathe[m]>
Which model do you have
<bonniek>
T14S 32GB 21N1 snapdragon
<bonniek>
lcd
<bonniek>
very impressed!!
<steev>
is it the oled?
<steev>
i do believe that ubuntu has the firmware for t14s, you can always try it, the iso has a live mode
<bonniek>
i'm running it, everything works except the brightness... also if i try to use an external mouse the scroll wheel crashes firefox :)
<bonniek>
it's LCD
<bonniek>
i think?
<bonniek>
WUXGA
<JensGlathe[m]>
There are 2 t14 dtbs, one for oled and one for the non-oled model. By default the non-oled gets selected (I think), so if yours is with the OLED display you would need to change it
<bonniek>
ah ok
<JensGlathe[m]>
sudo cat /sys/devices/platform/soc@0/ae00000.display-subsystem/ae01000.display-controller/drm/card1/card1-eDP-1/edid |edid-decode could help to find out what it is
<bonniek>
thanks
<bonniek>
if it's 60Hz it's IPS?
<JensGlathe[m]>
probably LCD
<bonniek>

changing /sys/class/backlight/dp_aux_backlight/brightness doesn't do anything
<JensGlathe[m]>
backlight brightness can be a PITA
<JensGlathe[m]>
Do you have some more information, SKU number?
<bonniek>
i think i am adjusting some external backlight
<JensGlathe[m]>
Maybe its a variant not yet seen, I had quite a time enablick backlight control on the ThinkBook 16
<bonniek>
21N10001US
<JensGlathe[m]>
An ACPI dump would also be nice
<bonniek>
i just bought it
<bonniek>
1x Snapdragon® X Elite X1E-78-100 Processor(X Elite X1E-78-100)
<JensGlathe[m]>
And you killed Windows afair
<bonniek>
yeah, well, i can restore it. oops
<bonniek>
how do i get an acpi dump on an arm device
<bonniek>
dtc?
<JensGlathe[m]>
from Windows with the acpica toolkit
<bonniek>
ok
<bonniek>
i'll put it back
<JensGlathe[m]>
Does anyone have this SKU 21n10001us and working brightness control?

bummer that the T14s snapdragon was discontinued - do we expect that we'll see another T or maybe X series Thinkpad with that CPU ?
<Jasper[m]>
where'd you read that?
<bonniek>
i can say it was on clearance

Are the acpica tools supposed to work from Linux as well on aarch64 devices?

if you boot with acpi without dtb and it does boot (and you have enough stuff working to run commands), they would
<jdb[m]>
That's a lot of "if" :-) That explains why it didn't work when I've tried recently when booted with a dtb

bonniek why ACPI dump: well, I found the deciding information for the backlight control in the dsdt tables. And I could never have guessed this. The odd thing about T14s is there are 2 variants of quite well understood (and sometimes cursed) configurations, this would be a third.
<bonniek>
JensGlathe[m]: !
<zdykstra>
Jasper[m]: it's on clearance - I maybe incorrectly interpreted that as discontinued. Not sure why else they'd put it on clearance.
<steev>
it's always on clearance
<Jasper[m]>
I wish it was in the EU
<Jasper[m]>
Purwa model is 1600€ on sale :(
<steev>
isn't purwa the less performant?
<robclark>
fewer cores, and maybe a bit lower clocks.. so difference depends on your use case
<Jasper[m]>
steev: The smaller chip yes, not based on the 12 core
<robclark>
laptop pricing is funny, I think it is a good example of supply and demand, ie. if they are short of some part then you pay full price, if not there are random discounts to prompt users with different $$$ thresholds ;-)
<HdkR>
And then there is Lenovo that just puts them on "sale" every other week :)
<robclark>
it's full price initially, until everyone willing to pay full price has done so, and then they lower periodically to catch more customers.. it is econ 101, "price is what the market will bear"
