<cousin_luigi> Greetings.
<cousin_luigi> AFter being burnt by an underpowered raspi 3, I was thinking of obtaining a cheap android tv box and installing some form of armbian on it for generic use. Do you think that might be a sensible course of action?

<Jookia> cousin_luigi: you'd need one compatible with armbian

<apritzel> cousin_luigi: what does
<apritzel> cousin_luigi: what does "generic use" mean? desktop use?
<apritzel> H618 based TV boxes would the same quad-A53 as the RPi3, and only slightly higher clocked (1.4-1.5GHz), just with more RAM typically (up to 4GB)
<apritzel> but we don't have HDMI and Ethernet support in mainline yet, though I think Armbian carries some hacked up patches
gsz has quit [Read error: No route to host]
<apritzel> for the new(ish) H728 (A523 cousin) boxes: they have eight A55 cores, at up to 1.8 GHz, at least on half the cores. But there is no graphics support for that yet, either, though Ethernet patches are on the list

<apritzel> but I think Amlogic or Rockchip TV boxes are better supported

<BroderTuck> apritzel: Speaking of h728 tv boxes, what would the dt fragment look like to be able to start debugging the ir rx ?

<apritzel> BroderTuck: something like this: https://pastebin.com/HfhKk6z1
<apritzel> but maybe I missed something, or it's some other pin or so?
<BroderTuck> the bsp boot log only lists the 'r' ir
<cousin_luigi> apritzel: Well, the idea would be to play movies and stream videos from FTA.
<cousin_luigi> apritzel: I need h265 support, that's the main thing.
junari has joined #linux-sunxi
<junari> cousin_luigi: don't know what is FTA means, but h618 can play 1080p h265 with patched ffmpeg and mpv
<junari> without hwaccel support. the maximum is 720p on youtube
<cousin_luigi> oh
<linkmauve> cousin_luigi, older SoCs have good support for video decoding, on my A64 phone I can decode 1080p H.265 with no issue using either Gstreamer or that ffmpeg patch.
<linkmauve> I’m also working on a Vulkan video driver for it.
<junari> linkmauve: but not online videos in browser, i think?
<linkmauve> WebKitGTK browsers use Gstreamer, so that should work I guess.
<linkmauve> I haven’t tried that though.
<linkmauve> Firefox only supports the stateful V4L2 decoder API, not the stateless one used by the cedrus driver.
ftg has joined #linux-sunxi
<cousin_luigi> junari: FTA as in Free To Air with a dongle. But re-routing those streams shouldn't be heavy on the CPU.
<cousin_luigi> linkmauve: Would that be a pinephone?
<linkmauve> cousin_luigi, yes.
<junari> gstreamer based things should work out-of-the-box?
<junari> For some reason, clapper cannot smoothly play videos, even though the CPU load is low
<linkmauve> junari, as long as it uses the v4l2slhevcdec element, and the pipeline doesn’t do unnecessary copies before reaching the display engine, it should work.

<BroderTuck> apritzel: The android boot log only mentions the ir @7040000, haven't checked which pin it is, but should be PL or PM. Don't really have a good setup for testing it at the moment
<apritzel> BroderTuck: yeah, I checked it after you mentioned that earlier, the BSP uses indeed the other IR. Have adjusted the DT already, but first need to fix some bug in my new polyphase regulator patch ...
<apritzel> BroderTuck: good call for mentioning this anyway, I thought I looked at the X96QPro+ BSP when doing my initial test
<BroderTuck> Right, I always thought it odd that you didn't get it working. Anyways, heading off now, back tomorrow, and as usual reading the logs.
BroderTuck has quit [Quit: Zzzzz...]
parthiban has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<apritzel> BroderTuck: so it is definitely s_ir_rx@7040000, pin is PL11. That seems to work on the BSP, but still not with mainline :-(
