<nicolas17>
there's rumors of a future MacBook with an A18 chip
<chaos_princess>
is that already in an iphone?
romankivs has joined #asahi
<nicolas17>
yes, the current generation of iPhones has A18 / A18 Pro

<fl0_id>
what would be the difference apart from naming? like ofc less cores etc, but are there like architecturally big differences between M<x> and A<x>
<chaos_princess>
there are architectural differences between vanilla M1 and pro/max, arguably m1 is more of a A<whatever>Z

chaos_princess thx. makes sense
<nicolas17>
"M1" vs "A14X" was pretty much a marketing decision yeah

<opticron>
but if that's the case, are they differentiating in the new mac to designate it as a lower-class machine?

<chaos_princess>
who knows what they will do, wait for the event i guess.
<opticron>
yeah, just speculation at this point and some things I won't say because it would just generate FUD
<chaos_princess>
what, that they will lock out 3-rd party oses? Probably not, the A-whatever should be capable of that, it is purely a firmware choice
<opticron>
yeah, I guess the M1 on ipad pro wasn't open either
<chaos_princess>
There are also spicy iphones out there, and while the mechanism is different, it is not about the chip itself.
<nicolas17>
Apple Configurator has an internal "ssh as root" menu item for spicy iphones, it's hidden but it shows up in menu search (maybe a bug in macOS 26?)
