<xdeus> Hi, just wanted to make sure, the upstream (Linus's) Linux kernel should usable, right? Like you can use the built-in keyboard and display to use the virtual terminals?
<chaos_princess> it is barely usable on anything except m1 mac minis
<xdeus> Oh I'm on the M1 Air, by the way
<xdeus> Ah
<jannau> no, no keyboard and no usb
<chaos_princess> unless you have some very specific reason to use upstream, you shouldnt
<xdeus> Ah okay. And the "asahi" branch in this repo https://github.com/asahilinux/linux is the one that's recommended, right?
<xdeus> I mean besides the stable/tagged verisions.
<chaos_princess> should be fine, but use the tags
<xdeus> Thanks

<xdeus> What does the "asahi-" prefix in that repo's tags mean? Some have that prefix and some don't. The ones that do seem to also always have another version number prefixed after the semver patch version.

<j`ey> non-asahi prefix ones are just upstream linux
<j`ey> the version number is the asahi version, after the upstream linux version
<xdeus> Ah, thanks.

<flokli> mmh, did anyone look into video playback? my m2air is struggling a lot playing videos 5312x2988@60fps (seems to be the resolution some gopros record at)
denisiurek has joined #asahi
<flokli> mpv says VO: [gpu] 5312x2988 yuv420p10, after apparently failing to go the vulkan path ("[ffmpeg/video] hevc: Device does not support the VK_KHR_video_decode_queue extension!\n[ffmpeg/video] hevc: Failed setup for format vulkan: hwaccel initialisation returned error.")
<chaos_princess> have you installed codecs
<chadmed> yes well you see 5K HEVC is probably not the kindest thing to a software decoder
<chaos_princess> it should work i think
<chaos_princess> just need freeworld-codecs or whatever that package is called from rpmfusion
<chadmed> i read the issue as "it is struggling performance wise" and the error message is a red herring
<chadmed> thats a vk video error
<chaos_princess> yes, but perf is a symptom of using stock fedora codecs, they are not good
<flokli> https://paste.linuxlounge.net/R4 <- this is the hwdec=help and vd=help outputs
<flokli> It's not fedora, but NixOS. Though I think they ship mpv with lots of codecs.
<chaos_princess> in that case - idk, but yes, probably it might be struggling then
<chadmed> M2 starts dropping frames even at 1080p60 with VP9 so i imagine 5K60 HEVC is probably not much better
<chadmed> i still dont have a good answer for how to deal with the hw decoders sanely though
<chadmed> drm driver(s) and vk video is probably the way to go tbh
Moprius has quit []
<flokli> so using the GPU, or exposing the AVD silicon?
<chaos_princess> avd is the only choice, gpu is a different piece of silicon that is irrelevant
<flokli> ok
<chadmed> everyone involved in PC ecosystem nomenclature should be put in a car crusher
<chadmed> the "GPU" in a PC is actually like 5 different things, only one of which is actually a GPU
<flokli> it's a general processing unit
* flokli ducks
<chadmed> even so, only that one block

<chaos_princess> flokli: considering the only purpose of a computer is to run matmuls, you aren't wrong :P
<chadmed> the video codec, display controller, memory controller(s), etc etc are not executing kernels

<jannau> chadmed: vp9 1080p60 should not be a problem (assuming reasonable bitrates). can you share a video which has issues?
<chadmed> jannau: basically all of youtube lol
<chadmed> flokli: thats a v4l2 driver which is different. we were initially going to use v4l2 (or a subset of it) but it turned out to not be a particularly good fit
<flokli> chadmed: I see, thanks
<chadmed> jannau: www.youtube.com/watch?v=CYmQCVfbH_Q this one will do it
<chadmed> drops ~8% of frames
<jannau> chadmed: the 5700k 1080p VP9 version of https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ secodes single threaded with 288fps
<chadmed> yeah its fine at 30/29 fps
<chadmed> 50/60 fps content is where the issues start
<chadmed> let me pull down the vid and try outside of the browser
pb17 has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<flokli> I can magic-wormhole a video once I finished uploading it from this slow connection here. If it's easily reproducible with something already at youtube, that'd of course be easier ;-)
pb17 has joined #asahi
<chadmed> im downloading the vp9 of the GN vid linked above
<chadmed> significantly fewer dropped frames when playing back locally
<jannau> I see just a few dropped frames even for the 4k60 locally
<jannau> 1080p60 version has in firefox less than 1% dropped frames. not nice but I wouldn't call that struggling performance wise. could be be easily just be an occasional missing vsync
<chadmed> well idk how im getting 8-10% consistently
betoissues has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<flokli> ^ hit the download button on the topright to get the original video, the one playing is downscaled i think
<flokli> and try to play that MP4 with mpv
<flokli> that's playing at like 2fps or so here, and prints angrily to the console

<falafool> hey, i've been trying to find a distro that i can use with hyprland. fedora works alright but many packages are not available and blender is quite buggy. nixos gets my laptop really hot, not sure why. arch package support on arm is uh... so left with debian which prob will get me in a lot of trouble for using hyprland even more than fedora, and gentoo. gentoo could work... What do you think, could gentoo be worth here?
<chaos_princess> hyprland is not broken because of distros but because it is hyprland
<chaos_princess> author subscribes to a policy of "not-x86 does not exist and can't hurt you"
<chaos_princess> also, i am not sure how is fedora missing packages, i thought they had everything under the sun
<chadmed> not sure why fedora was giving issues but yes gentoo works fine
<chadmed> not particularly interested in supporting hyprland-specific issues however for the reason above
<jannau> flokli: that video is in addition to high resolution high bit bit rate (120mbps). I need 6 performance cores to be faster than realtime decoding (on average). so this video is too much for base m1 and m2
<flokli> jannau: using software decoding
gruetzhaxe has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<falafool> may give gentoo a try... is there maybe something similar to hyprland more arm friendly
<chaos_princess> i now wonder if macos can do it with videotoolbox
<chadmed> 120mbps seems like a tall ask for avd
<jannau> I'd say 2:1 that it works
<fl0_id> I tried it with quicktime, but on a much bigger soc
<fl0_id> so not sure how much that says
<j`ey> fl0_id: that will be using hw though
falafool has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<fl0_id> j`ey well yes, but above they said "wonder if macos can it with videotoolbox"
<fl0_id> assuming this refered to the bitrate especially
<chaos_princess> the fact that quicktime played it doesn't mean it used avd. the right way to check would be to feed it into ffmpeg with the videotoolbox hwaccel flag, and then see if it fails to initialize it
<jannau> looking at CPU usage while it's played would probably a good indicator as well
<j`ey> fl0_id: sorry missed that!
<fl0_id> chaos_princess yeah I know. I did look at cpu usage. it didn't spike much so likely not used it. I'll try ffmpeg just for fun
<fl0_id> if I disable hwaccel in vlc (not sure if that uses ffmpeg) it uses 45/50 % cpu
<fl0_id> )
<fl0_id> but that is over all cores, so not surprised m1 air is dropping frames
<fl0_id> ffmpeg with -hwaccel flag doesn't fail to initialize, but says it fell back to sdl as vulkan renderer is not supported. not sure if that is because of the ffmpeg from homebrew though
