so completely different question, this one hardware related. I have an M2 MacBook Pro. If I read the asahi feature support table correctly, I can see that there is currently no support for Thunderbolt and probably won't be any time soon (as the feature is labelled TBA). Since I'm an idiot and don't know hardware very well: does this mean thunderbolt periphery just won't work at all or
<the_eye>
do these things generally have some kind of fallback usb-c mode?
<the_eye>
like e.g. if I buy a thunderbolt dock (thinking in the future-proofing direction, only want to buy a really good one once), would that work, just in a dininished way, or will it just not work at all?
<jbe>
It Depends(tm)

<chaos_princess>
in this case - it will negotiate thunderbolt and then fail to work, as the apple alt-mode chip is too clever and does not support it's decisions being overridden
<chaos_princess>
if you force it to go via usb-a, it might or might not fallback to usb3, but who knows

<fl0_id>
the_eye you mostly need thunderbolt for things like multi stream etc, and then get like a caldigit. but if that doesn't offer anythin you need, usb-c is good enough
<fl0_id>
(IMO)
<the_eye>
thanks, ok. then I'll just get a usb-c one
<fl0_id>
(Disclaimer: if all usb c ones work with asahi I do not know...)
<chaos_princess>
the secret that the big usb-c does not want you to know is that they all use the same chips
<fl0_id>
chaos_princess sure, I just added that because there were some reports of some maybe not working, and I didn't want to claim they all do b/c I don't know that...

I got one of those displaylink docks, but I'm not having a good time with it :-/
<the_eye>
trying to determine whether I'm going crazy over here: Is there any basis that might explain why I'm seeing the following pattern: I'm trying to (again, made some changes) flash a firmware to this small embedded board. Same as two days ago, I connect it to my MacBook Pro, hit the button that makes it connect and ... it won't mount. I go wtf this worked 2 days ago. Try to retrace my
<the_eye>
steps, nothing works. It's not SELinux, it's not that ModemManager is running, nothing.
<the_eye>
so next up I reboot into MacOS. Connect, hit button, it connects (same as yesterday). I reboot back into Asahi. Connect, hit button, it automounts.
<the_eye>
Is there any sane explanation for this?
<the_eye>
I mean it's not that it works only once or something, I just connected it again and it still works. Hmmm. lemme reboot this Macbook and see if that makes it break again.
<the_eye>
nope, a fresh boot is not it. hmm. different idea.
<the_eye>
also not caused by the usb-c to -a adapter not being present during boot. anything I try now, it still works. So I can only assume that one of the system updates I installed yesterday changed _something_ and after rebooting into MacOS and back into linux it works again? this is just.. baffling

claims as an armchair idiot that display link is not supported now and every time it is asked about the schedule slips.
