sven: Did I read this correctly, you managed to get usb3+dp and usb4 up? Congrats.

<Glanzmann>
sven: Does that mean that display port is working over usb or is it a typo and it should be pd (power delivery)?
<Glanzmann>
Anyway, I think it is a good thing that finally everything get upstreamed. Since a few months I use mac mini as my primary workstation again.

ah looks solid for the august release. I think last time i checked in fan control wasn't ready/a option yet. Looking through the irc chat history https://oftc.catirclogs.org/asahi/search?q=fan+control# it looks like that still is the case?
<chadmed>
i gated it behind a module param because we dont know if its safe or not
<chadmed>
im like 90% sure its safe but like, the smc really expects to be in control
<chaos_princess>
out of curiosity - why would you want manual fan control?
okb has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
hdbngr has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<chadmed>
yeah its not like the smc does a shit x86 mobo tier job of controlling them
<chadmed>
there is sufficient hysteresis compensation and a really long soak time with a shallow ramp
<chadmed>
you barely notice when they turn on
hdbngr has joined #asahi
<ciara>
chaos_princess: idk i just like running it at a barely audiable rate when i'm using it plugged in. In the attempt to keep the battery cooler to make the device last a little longer
<chaos_princess>
sure. i would suggest letting smc do it's job anyway, but if you like to do that - why not.
<ciara>
chadmed: in that like the device gets a wrong value and never starts up again or just that like if the device gets actually hot and the fan doesn't turn on and it cooks the device?
<chadmed>
ciara: the latter. the driver will prevent you from writing bogus values in the first place but we're not sure what the smc does if you e.g. force the fans off and let the thing overheat to dangerous temps
<ciara>
ah.. yeah it probably doesn't have similar x86 like.. management/baseboard logic to monitor for that.. or at least it's not 1:1 with modern architecture
hdbngr has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<chadmed>
ciara: hence the name of the module parameter :p
<chaos_princess>
there is probably something to hard-shutoff the soc once it reaches 105 c or so, but for obvious reasons, there aren't really volunteers to test
<ciara>
"anyone willing to cook their macbook thank you"
<sven>
we *could* buy a second hand m1 and see what happens :>
