hello, is asahi being actively maintained ? i'm planning to buy an m2 air just to get asahi on it since i'm unable to find a similar hardware (screen,battery,body) in the same price range. am i doing the right thing ? (i'm ok with hdmi not working and other limitations mentioned, i'm hoping for a good ~8-12hrs battery life)

mostly because of how efficient everything else is, the screen backlight dominates the power usage when it is on, so our terrible power efficiency does not matter :P

hmm, we have a similar issue with screenreaders. In most cases, a screenreader has an option often refered to as curtain, on windows, android and ios at least. This blacks out the screen when the user activates it. I think both of these issues would be solved with a new protocol which would allow certain clients to do that

the reason for it being almost as good as macos is because backlight takes such a large percentage of power use, that the rest does not matter. And if you turn it off, like in sleep, then the differences are noticeable

well yeah, linux has a huge power with idle power consumption in general. See, for example, linux mobile, where one could either do a systemctl suspend but then they miss on rings and notifications, or keep it on mostly and then power gets drained. I think they call what they're doing now s3 sleep or something, maybe that'll fix it? though I'm doubtful

freedesktop/android userspace is not really the thing to blame, more that andorid kernels run huge hal or or el3 blobs that do the right thing for power management, and those mostly aren't ported to upstream linux side

The transparency, glass effects and other nonsense are mostly fine, to me the main problem is that the window chrome now takes too much focus compared to content. It is bigger, it does distracting stuff, and it sometimes semi-obscures the content where you aren't sure if it is supposed to be interactable or not
