But I have no idea how you do it now that each desktop environment is a separate wayland server
<twb>
Definitely not mentioned in "dconf dump /org/gnome/desktop/peripherals/touchpad/" on gnome
<twb>
But definitely gnome does disable touchpad while pressing keys, I can see that by mashing keys while swiping and seeing the pointer stop moving. It feels like about 2-3 seconds

https://asahilinux.org/docs/platform/feature-support/m4/#table-of-contents I read this but am wondering, how far does this allow you to go on an M4 MBA (which btw is not listed in devices), could you boot into the command line, what about lxqt or xfce using cpu rendering? I asked a slop generator but I doubt its response obviously so I thought I'd ask here
<twb>
slop-gen-user: I'm just a newbie, but my impression is that you can't really boot linux on M3 or M4 at all
hdbngr has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<slop-gen-user>
thats what I thought too, but I guess I was hoping the slop generator wasn't lying
<twb>
Like at a minimum I'm seeing devicetree and GPU/display are "TBA" there
<chaos_princess>
on m4 absolutely nothing works, you can't even execute a single instruction (apple bug, is fixed in macos 26 betas)
<twb>
And IIUC the current priority is to get the *existing* support into mainline kernel, and until that's done nobody wants to touch M3/M4

Hi, I'm trying to install Asahi on an old M1 MacBook Air I have, unfortunately, its screen is broken so I use it as a headless machine, but I'm unable to get anything on my external monitor when booting to Asahi, this is, even with the lid on. No video output is fine with me, as I have a newer machine and wanted to use my M1 as server, but is there a way to preset the user account, network config and SSH?

<chaos_princess>
serial could work
<ulisesv>
How would that go? I'm not very familiar

<chaos_princess>
kind of involved: 1. get a second machine. 2. On first - mount efi system partition and copy m1n1/boot.bin to the second. Set up m1n1 on first for the proxy mode https://asahilinux.org/docs/sw/m1n1-user-guide/#backdoor-proxy-mode-in-stage-1-release-builds 3. connect both over usb, turn on the one with asahi, and from second - use picocom to connect to the virtual serial
<chaos_princess>
the parts where you enable proxy mode are done from recoveryOS
<ulisesv>
got it, tysm

<jannau>
initial setup via serial works for minimal and/or server (probably both). probably not for the desktop variants
<chaos_princess>
it should be fine as long as the only thing you want is to set up networking?
<jannau>
it provides locale, timezone, network setup and user management (user creation and setting a root password)
<chaos_princess>
right, if there is no root password, it won't work
<ulisesv>
oh but i was going to use the minimal variant, so I'm good, right?
<jannau>
editing the kernel command line and adding `init=/bin/sh` would be always possible once you have serial (and a broken screen)
anticataclyst has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<jannau>
ulisesv: I'm pretty sure that both minimal and server have a terminal based initial setup
<ulisesv>
but HDMI over USB C doesn't work, right? and because I don't have the internal screen and no network set up, I would have to still use serial
<chaos_princess>
yes, you would have to use serial to set up networking and then ssh into it or something
<ulisesv>
got it, i'll do that
<chaos_princess>
do not recommend to use serial in normal operation, the method above technically runs linux in a virtual machine-ish.
<jannau>
yes, use serial only for the intial setup of sshd (and as diagnostics if the machine becomes unreachable)
pb17 has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<ulisesv>
got it, thanks:)
<ulisesv>
just curious, what's wrong with using usb serial regularly?
<ulisesv>
(other than the jankiness)
<chaos_princess>
it runs linux in a very thin vm, so there is overhead, and if the usb connection gets lost the system shuts down, as the "brains" of the vmm is on the host machine
<jannau>
mostly that runs the system in a hypervisor intended for development
<ulisesv>
got it
<jannau>
one of the USB-C ports muxes a real uart but accessing that is not trivial as in needing special HW or another apple silicon mac (with macos 11 or annoying configuration / kernel patching)

Is doing something useful with the SEP (e.g. for systemd-cryptsetup / LUKS keys) something that is theoretically achievable? Or if the SEP something that will only ever be usable by first-party Apple code?
