Hi, a friend of mine would like to install Asahi, but she has little disk space atm, and Time Machine has never worked for her; is it possible to do a backup of the whole macOS partition from the Asahi installer?
<twb>
I'm a complete newbie but I haven't seen an option like that yet
<twb>
Do you only care about user documents, or also backing up macos (system config &c)?
<twb>
cos if it's only user documents you have quick-and-dirty options like "plug in a USB HDD and rsync $HOME to it"
<linkmauve>
Ideally she’d like to be able to restore the macOS as it was before as well, including applications and such if anything went wrong.
<linkmauve>
Would it be ok to backup the whole partition or even NVMe disk from the Asahi installer?
<linkmauve>
Is that something that can be restored as is?
<chaos_princess>
asahi-installer is... an installer, it is just a macos app
chrisl has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<chaos_princess>
and what kinda issue is with time machine?
<fl0_id>
with apps like carbon copy cloner, you can give that disk copy to the installer and it will bascially copy everything
cylm has joined #asahi
<fl0_id>
but she still shouldn't totally get rid of macos as per recommendatiosn
<chaos_princess>
for various reasons you probably shouldn't copy apfs volumes with dd
<fl0_id>
(it probably works with free tools like diskutil too, but ymmv)
<fl0_id>
chaos_princess thx good point
<linkmauve>
chaos_princess, I never heard of this application before today, but apparently no backups ever got made.
<linkmauve>
(Time Machine I mean.)
<twb>
It sounds like you should spend at least a little time trying to get Time Machine working
<linkmauve>
We’re trying to do that atm.
<linkmauve>
But I have very little clue about macOS or Time Machine, and I can’t figure out how to see any debug logs there.
chrisl has joined #asahi
<chaos_princess>
how about just telling what y'all are doing and what happens?
<linkmauve>
Ok so, she has a NAS which is recognized as a Time Machine thingy, configured as such, but even though the Time Machine application says that it is syncing to it, there is never a backup made afterwards.
<linkmauve>
When trying to “go back in time”, no backup is listed whatsoever.
<chaos_princess>
backup to usb

Is there a way I can use the installer to create a bootable partition on an m4 mac mini? Or additional information about how to extract the good bits from an IPSW to do it manually?
<chaos_princess>
bootable partition of what?
<ahepp>
Maybe bootable partition isn't the right word for it. But I was hoping to create an APFS container capable of running a fuOS so I could try toying around and see if I could get m1n1 running. With the understanding of course that it's not supported :).
gruetzhaxe has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<chaos_princess>
sure, just make a second macos install, it is a better environment to mess around with fuOS
chrisl has joined #asahi
<ahepp>
Ah ok thanks. And so I would create a new APFS container, do a macos install, and then I would install m1n1 stage 1 into the preboot volume? And create an additional vfat volume for the EFI partition?
hdbngr_ has joined #asahi
<ahepp>
And of course do the stuff in RecoveryOS to boot the m1n1 as the fuOS?
<chaos_princess>
yes, run the relevant bputil and kmutil commands. And no need to bother with vfat, you aren't even near needing it at this point
chrisl has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<ahepp>
roger, thanks :)
hdbngr has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<jannau>
ahepp: you don't need a separate APFS container. a new volume in the existing one is enough

chaos_princess, twb, in the end it seems we succeeded at using the NAS to store things, thanks for telling me to persevere in that direction!
<linkmauve>
Now time to install Asahi. :)
<twb>
what was the problem?
<twb>
(I still haven't set up Time Machine because I probably won't continue using macOS at all.)
<linkmauve>
I’m not completely sure, we both upgraded the NAS system, and found out the admin password of the NAS, plus connected to Ethernet, so too many variables to be certain sorry.
<chaos_princess>
off-the-shelf or custom?
<twb>
Fair enough. If it was real old, maybe it was only CIFS instead of SMB3 or something.

<twb>
https://support.apple.com/en-us/102423 just says "SMB", I can't find any more info about requiremnts (e.g. whether it needs hard link support enabled)
<twb>
(AFAIK Time Machine is more-or-less the same strategy as rsync --link-dest, as seen in rsnapshot.)

<tpw_rules>
time machine creates a disk image which has the fancy filesystem stuff enabled. it's uuic more modern now but the nas doesn't need to care
<tpw_rules>
iiuc*
<tpw_rules>
(it has always used a disk image too)
<twb>
tpw_rules: righto
<twb>
I only ever looked at it when jwz complained :-)
