<gentoouser>
reinstalling gentoo by the official guide
<gentoouser>
guide doesn't say which stage3 file to use. not even arch. arm64 or aarch64?
<gentoouser>
okay then. when I boot livecd I cannot remount efivarfs rw. same when I boot intalled gentoo
<chaos_princess>
makes sense, there is no efi variable storage on those machines
seb__ has joined #asahi-alt
<gentoouser>
how do I install grub then?
<chaos_princess>
use the default boot path (/EFI/BOOT/BOOTAA64.EFI)
<chaos_princess>
mind linking the guide?
n3ph has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<gentoouser>
when it comes to installing grub there are 2 options: mbr and efi. I am using efi. the command line for installing grub efi complains that efivarfs is readonly
<gentoouser>
ginne a sec it is official amd64 installation guide
<chaos_princess>
read the docs for grub-install, there should be some argument for installing on external media, probably something like "--removable" - use that one
<gentoouser>
thanks
<leio>
the asahi guide tells to follow the amd64 installation guide up to the kernel install point (not included); bootloader stuff is even further than that
<leio>
gentoo asahi install guide
<chaos_princess>
i was trying to verify they aren't following the "other" guide
<leio>
though the asahi guide doesn't detail things for grub, and there are other options; we might want to scribble something about that in there
<chaos_princess>
time to shill sd-boot? :P
<gentoouser>
leio the official guide says use this for kernel section and then proceed. I am actually through the guide and dealing with boot issues
<gentoouser>
leio don't see any mention of sd-boot there. first time I read about it is this chat
<chaos_princess>
"Install an EFI bootloader (any will do, GRUB is typical however systemd-boot works well too)"
<chaos_princess>
yea, i think we should add the bit about --removable here
<gentoouser>
I am on openrc
<leio>
(sd-boot is systemd-boot, formerly named gummiboot)
<chaos_princess>
doesn't matter, you can use sd-boot for all init systems
<leio>
these are separate things, there's no systemd during bootloader stage, just developed in systemd repo, like udev is. Also you will be on your own in some aspects with openrc with asahi.
<gentoouser>
I know
<craftyguy>
you can build and use sd-boot separately from systemd, we do that in Alpine Linux
<gentoouser>
as I am more familiar with grub, Id prefer grub
<gentoouser>
but I may look into sd-boot anyway. thanks
<leio>
sd-boot is provided by systemd-utils[boot] for openrc systems, but if you're happy with grub, use grub
<leio>
(and systemd[boot] for systemd systems)
