gentoouser: dont use xorg,, and also apple_drm is the display controller not the gpu
<chadmed>
you need DRM_ASAHI too

chadmed : CONFIG_DRM_ASAHI is y in /proc/config.gz. Could you please elaborate on not using xorg? wayland? what compositor and or display manager then?
gentoouser has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<mps>
IME wayland and xorg both works fine
<mps>
but ofc, I don't know for gentoo
<jannau>
xorg/X11 "works" but is not recommend
<jannau>
gentoouser: which kernel package / version and which mesa version is installed? please provide the output of `emerge --info mesa`. does `journalctl -k -g gpu` contain "kernel: [drm] Initialized asahi 0.0.0 for 406400000.gpu on minor 1" or similar
gentoouser has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<chadmed_>
gentoouser: xorg "works" but we had to do a few weird things as workarounds because this hardware is fundamentally incompatible with how the xorg server/x11 protocol _expects_ display hardware to works
<chadmed_>
so while it may "work" we do not support it and any xorg support queries will end with you being told to use a wayland session
<chadmed_>
gentoouser: how did you install asahi btw? did you follow a guide?
gentoouser has joined #asahi-alt
<gentoouser>
back then the official guide was in the works
<gentoouser>
used Jared's walkthrough with fedora
<gentoouser>
chadmed : I sent you an email about battery persistance about a year ago
<gentoouser>
that was when I already had it
<jannau>
gentoouser: is the GPU driver loaded, check with `dmesg | grep gpu`

gentoo's mesa-25.2 mask was removed, is the x86 root fs still blocked?
<chadmed_>
is your user a member of the video group
<chadmed_>
usermod -aG audio,video,plugdev,wheel is usually the first thing you should do when creating yourself a user otherwise a whole heap of shit wont work properly
<chadmed_>
especially if you insist on using xorg
<chaos_princess>
Just put 777 on everything in /dev/dri, who cares
<chaos_princess>
This is why display managers exist btw
gentoouser has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<chadmed_>
even so, i dont think ive ever had to care about this when launching a session properly with dbus-launch on the cli
<chadmed_>
so still sounds like pebcak

I am just seeking assistance with an issue. wayland would work for me just fine only it's worse. my user is a member of all above groups plus render, groups have rw
<chaos_princess>
And it is still doing a permission denied?
<gentoouser>
only for eglinfo in x11
<chaos_princess>
Tried 777 on everything?
<gentoouser>
and eglinfo still produces output with that error
<chaos_princess>
Something went really wrong there i guess.

<chadmed_>
at this point id probably recommend reinstalling with the proper guide on the gentoo wiki now
<chadmed_>
and for the record no the official guide was not a WIP when you installed, and in fact was written and done before jared allard ever published his to the gentoo wiki
<chadmed_>
no end of issues stemming from that fucking guide my goodness
<chadmed_>
only thing i can think of is maybe asahi-configs isnt installed and so youre not getting the xorg config fragment that tells it which card is the actual render device
<chadmed_>
but if you installed asahi-meta then it gets pulled in

I think the xorg server config snipped should be backported with a security fix release last year
<jannau>
that wouldn't explain why wayland is slow as well
