<__tim>
ooc, would there be a problem for gstreamer to start upload binary packages to gitlab's package registry? (including old ones, possibly)
<__tim>
I think we currently have around 150GB of old packages, and every release adds ca. 6-7 GB, so maybe 100 GB or so per year
<__tim>
want to move stuff away from annarchy in the long run
<__tim>
actually I might have underestimated the old data amount, it doesn't include all old packages
<__tim>
details
<__tim>
seeing that Hetzner S3 is like 5 EUR per TB per month that shouldn't really move the dial much hopefully?
<bentiss>
__tim: yeah, should be fine, and we are slightly underusing the $1000 sponsorship of cloud credit, so not sure it'll add anything to the bill
<__tim>
That's monthly or annually? :)
<bentiss>
__tim: monthly
<__tim>
nice!
<bentiss>
yep :)
<__tim>
I'm guessing it only counts towards cloud services not dedicated runners?
<bentiss>
yep
<__tim>
darn :)
<bentiss>
last month we used $952.7058 in cloud credits
<bentiss>
so I'm not worried that we actually pay for the runners
<__tim>
ok, cool, thanks
<bentiss>
and that extra $50 is a nice enough buffer in case we have a S3 storage growing too fast
<__tim>
if I play around with stuff and upload/delete resources in a test project that will be deleted again later and not stay around forever, right?
<bentiss>
__tim: I wouldn't be 100% sure
<__tim>
ok :)
<bentiss>
in theory yes, gitlab should clean it up
<bentiss>
but I never tried it
<__tim>
are things deduplicated at the S3 level? e.g. if the same file is uploaded to different projects?
<bentiss>
no, I don't think so. IIRC the "path" contains the repo hash
<__tim>
right I meant if the underlying hash is the same
<bentiss>
well, the hash is related to the repo, not the file, so different repo, different files even if they are the same
<bentiss>
(and hash is more like a uuid than anything else in this case)
<__tim>
right I mean the actual file object hash
<__tim>
anyway, I'll play around with it, thank you
<bentiss>
I know, that's why I tried to explain why the files wouldn't be duplicated

<Consolatis>
I guess they could be de-duplicated on the actual storage layer, ignoring the "path". Its just a question if Hetzner would then still include that de-duplicated file as used space or not, I'd assume it will
<Consolatis>
I also assume that Hetzner does not de-duplicate like that because it adds unnecessary complexity to the whole system (also needs to handle content based hash collisions and so on)
<bentiss>
Consolatis: that's more like how the S3 protocol works. There is no "path", the path is actually a key which happens to have '/' in it. At the disk level, everything is flatten
<bentiss>
anyway, unless we've got TBs of duplicated data, it should be fine
