?
<notHorseface>
you mean trying things to complete doom?
<asteroidimalittleteapot[m]>
Correct
<HdkR>
Sadly Doom takes place on Mars, so first we need to ship all the AI there so it can reenact the remaining bit of opening a portal to hell.
<asteroidimalittleteapot[m]>
Thankfully that what musk is taking care of
<HdkR>
They can go there as well
<notHorseface>
lol

<Treibholz[m]>
Doom took place on Phobos and Deimos...
<Treibholz[m]>
In other news: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martian_Moons_eXploration "Martian Moons eXploration (MMX) is a robotic space probe set for launch in 2026 to bring back the first samples from Mars' largest moon Phobos."
<Treibholz[m]>
What could possibly go wrong...

so I got the X2E Zenbook A14, already seeing the other USB-C port being broken like on X1E Vivobook... is Asus just incompetent or is this common design on other laptops too?
<deathmist>
broken as in it discharges under full load in WSL even (the usual LLVM build test)
<penguin42[m]>
my zenbook x1e manages to have all 3 ports working
<Mis012[m]>
is it possible that it's only intended to be charged using one port
<Mis012[m]>
but they somehow managed to make charging half-work with the other too
<Mis012[m]>
without necessarily trying to
<deathmist>
just incredible, there's no notification about "please use the other port" or anything, battery just slowly discharges as time goes on
<Mis012[m]>
idk if windows has a way to show such notifications fwiw
<deathmist>
will have to decide if I want to deal with this.. if the main port breaks this machine is just cooked because eGPU likely also won't work with "broken" one as I already saw before, checking in a moment
<deathmist>
well it does that if you use a charger too slow already
<Mis012[m]>
hm, so I guess windows just doesn't know that the slow part could be not the charger
<Mis012[m]>
could probably teach Linux that though
<Mis012[m]>
why'd you even use Windows, other than to check if something is broken there too
<deathmist>
I haven't done anything else yet lol, I did see they love the android style of having 16+ partitions
<clover[m]>
correct me if im wrong, i think other people in here noticed that on the X1 or X2 laptops (i don't remember which), if they are under load, the battery will drain even if its plugged in.
<Mis012[m]>
deathmist: windows?
<Mis012[m]>
I think android has <10, most stuff is qcom's shit
<Mis012[m]>
and on a laptop that would generally be in spi flash
<Mis012[m]>
Mis012[m]: maybe <5 without A/B even
FANTOM has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<deathmist>
well yea ofc it's just OEM garbage in this case and probably non-critical to nuke. should check if they actually fixed their "cloud recovery" USB thing because on X1E it couldn't detect a charger... or maybe I was unlucky and again decided to use "the wrong one" previously
<deathmist>
will prob reinstall fresh myself later anyway just to have dual-boot for whatever reason (including eGPU atm)
<deathmist>
should decide which tree I should build from and apply the A14 LKML patchset on top of though before trying Linux
<Mis012[m]>
I don't remember, is there a leaked BSP for hamoa?
<Mis012[m]>
could probably get an LLM to write a downstream quality usb4 driver from that
<Mis012[m]>
iirc they have UEFI drivers for usb4 for... some reason
<deathmist>
hmmm... eGPU via oculink and SSD as USB4? :D
<Mis012[m]>
well, ideally if you want max perf and lowest cost you would want two m.2 slots
<Mis012[m]>
you won't get a x8 oculink
<Mis012[m]>
but I suppose that would be even better if it was in any way likely
<deathmist>
are there even any X2E laptops with 2x M.2 slots?
<Mis012[m]>
no idea
<Mis012[m]>
I don't get why 2x m.2 slots aren't way more common in like 15" laptops that have enough pcie lines for them
<Mis012[m]>
deathmist: but honestly usb3 ssd should work fine
<Mis012[m]>
it's more the ergonomics that become a problem
<min1123[m]>
Qualcomm's 7C chips with WoA had over 40 partitions. If they went away, there was no visible POST or anything else, and a standard Windows restore medium, made by the device, would blow those partitions away and brick the device.
<Mis012[m]>
7c1?
<Mis012[m]>
those didn't have pcie
<min1123[m]>
Yeah.
<deathmist>
that's UFS memes tho I'd assume
<Mis012[m]>
yeah
<Mis012[m]>
those partitions are now hidden on the spi flash
<min1123[m]>
Under the processor lid.
<Mis012[m]>
deathmist: fwiw easy enough to fix with EDL - oh right
<deathmist>
one thing that's great about A14 so far is that it appears to have bypass charging, the capacity doesn't drain/charge constantly between a percent range on windows anyway, assuming you use the correct port anyway..
<Mis012[m]>
not even any modem shit to worry about in many cases :P
<deathmist>
on Linux it behaved a bit different but still was clearly visible flipflopping of charge between two states
<deathmist>
(on X1E Vivobook)
<deathmist>
for Linux boot on X2E I assume mainline should be decent enough at this point? then just drop devicetree or whatever on top
<Mis012[m]>
well, to boot you don't really need much
<Mis012[m]>
but yeah I think people here have been reporting success already
<deathmist>
I'd like a properly functional machine, as much as possible anyway at this stage
<deathmist>
guess I'll just try mainline + A14 patches and see how much is broken
