Hi all, I switched from Ubuntu to Fedora on my X1E Yoga Slim 7x just to see how things are on there and it's pretty okay now as long as I don't update it for some reason. It has stubble for automatic devicetree selection like Ubuntu and of course Hans de Goede also putting a lot of effort into Fedora working on these
<Ruen>
But for some reason it breaks when updating. dnf update went from a 6.19 kernel to 7.1 and it looks like msm drm broke and not even a TTY works
<Ruen>
Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix it, or is it just down to some kernel regression in mainline?

<JensGlathe[m]>
There was a lot of patches from 6.19 to 7.1 required to not end in a black screen. What are the symptoms?
<JensGlathe[m]>
Hav fun with this one, its a good laptop
<notHorseface>
haha yey!
<notHorseface>
it isn't there is nothing on the screen!
<notHorseface>
oh noe
<notHorseface>
I select aarch64 arch linux boot (option) initrd and then it shows the rc loading things, like whatever, similar to the systemd boot initrd system, and then it just shows a blank screen!!!
<notHorseface>
aaahhhhhh
<notHorseface>
lol
<notHorseface>
it says that a start job is running for /dev/gpt/auto-root ...
<notHorseface>
any idea..?
<notHorseface>
:-'(
<notHorseface>
;p;
<notHorseface>
lol*
<notHorseface>
and then the screen goes blank for seemingly forever...
<notHorseface>
lol
<notHorseface>
:-'(
<JensGlathe[m]>
You're doing arch, btw I guess

<notHorseface>
yes
<notHorseface>
hey JensGlathe[m] which is your repository for the boot images?
<notHorseface>
I will just try to create it using the ubuntu one...
<agl>
Oh nice! I have debian testing on my x13s and the kernel 7.0.10 of steev.
<steev>
agl: i have been busy so i have not had a chance to look into them, sorry
<steev>
and yes, you can use a mainline kernel, it doesn't have the patches i had, but it works
<steev>
some patches it does, some it does not
jhovold has joined #aarch64-laptops

steev: Ok than I will try the mainline kernel.
<steev>
if you are on debian already, you can just use the debian kernel
<notHorseface>
wow JensGlathe[m]...
<notHorseface>
I mean Jadesheher[m].
<notHorseface>
Jadesheher[m] where is the iso for the hp omnibook x14 please?
<notHorseface>
do you know?
<deathmist>
all you'd need to do to make a machine-specific ISO is define its devicetree (dtb), but at that point you'd probably be better of bootstrapping from something else booting and just deal with that when you setup your own bootloader
<notHorseface>
oh I see...
<notHorseface>
so which would you recommend that I do?
<notHorseface>
to get my new laptop working...
<notHorseface>
:-
<notHorseface>
:-(
<deathmist>
get anything Linux booting at all, when you setup bootloader find how to define a devicetree for it, you'd use qcom/x1e80100-hp-omnibook-x14.dtb (should exist somewhere in your final rootfs)
<deathmist>
there's stubble too ig but not everything integrates that. Ubuntu and Fedora should for example making that step unneeded in general
<deathmist>
also keep your windows partition unless you like digging for the firmware from other sources (it's not in linux-firmware because ofc)
<notHorseface>
oh I see.
<notHorseface>
thanks!
<notHorseface>
okay!

steev: I have for a longer time not compiled a kernel. How can I generate a .config? With "make defconfig"? Or can i use the .config from your kernel 7.0.10?
pbrobinson has joined #aarch64-laptops
<deathmist>
agl: why build a kernel anyway? trixie seems to have 6.12, but with -backports enabled you should have 7.1 as of today
<agl>
deathmist: How is the Debian linux-kernel called? Simple "linux". I have deinstalled the linux kernel and have all the time compiled and installd self the kernel.
<agl>
steev: I have generated with "make defconfig" a .config and now the kernel 7.2 is compiled.
<agl>
deathmist: How can I install the debian Linux kernel? "apt install linux" ?

HdkR: looks like I finally got to the bottom of the problem discharge problem... the X1E Zenbook "top-left" type-C port is the only one that works properly.. I already noticed that with eGPU but apparently that also extends to charging too, so much for "two full-function USB4 40 Gbps ports"
dc7800 has quit [Read error: Connection reset by peer]
<agl>
deathmist: Thank you that is a usefull information. I use Debian testing not trixie.
<deathmist>
so then linux-image-arm64 already gives you 7.1.8 without backports even
<agl>
steev: ag@Debian-x13s:~$ uname -a
<agl>
Linux Debian-x13s 7.2.0 #1 SMP PREEMPT Sat Aug 22 12:54:23 CEST 2026 aarch64 GNU/Linux
<agl>
ag@Debian-x13s:~$
<agl>
steev: 7.2.0 works
<agl>
steev: With USB-Thethering
<agl>
(rndis-host)
<agl>
steev: At this moment I have over USB-Thethering a connection over my Handy to the Internet. Works very well. I need it becaus I'am going at Thursday to a Hospital.

angeryboi[m]: SpieringsAE_sff: on your X1E Vivobooks can you repro my issue of only one of the type-C ports with original charger working properly especially under load? that also seems to have been the source of my battery charging limit issue too..
<deathmist>
testing under Windows with NVIDIA eGPU also should make it pretty obvious if the closest-to-you port is faulty and just causes watchdog to kill the system in ~20 seconds or so while the other one works as expected
<deathmist>
konradybcio: is there any chance to get Asus to care about upstreaming linux-firmware now that https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commit/e8fbbca etc will in v7.3? seems to be the first non-CRD X2E laptop that landed upstream (https://github.com/search?q=repo:torvalds/linux+path:arch/arm64/boot/dts/qcom/glymur*.dts&type=code)

angeryboi[m]: try building LLVM for example (git clone https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project -b release/22.x --depth 1 && cd llvm-project && cmake -S llvm -B build -G Ninja && ninja -C build), it should be very quickly apparent if it starts dipping below a charge limit, clocks drop or similar even on Windows/WSL

I was going to buy a pineapple but decided against it and instead purchased some raspberry jam...
<Jadesheher[m]>
okay and how do i make the kernel now with this patch?
<JensGlathe[m]>
Erm my tree has them
<JensGlathe[m]>
and I do Ubuntu, btw
<Jadesheher[m]>
hmm clovercan you maybe help me out?
<JensGlathe[m]>
The last 2 are for this issue specifically IMO. I have tested with up to 4 displays
<JensGlathe[m]>
night light starts to get a bit error-ish with 3 displays, but works... until you suspend

[@thisjade:blahaj.live](https://matrix.to/#/@thisjade:blahaj.live) if its not a super new patch and steev has it in his tree you can try linux-x13s from the ironrobin repo
<Jadesheher[m]>
does it still work with archlinux ports?
